Valentine’s day is just around the corner. A brief search online will reveal many valentine themed lists of San Francisco specific events, restaurants, or gift ideas. Any combination of which should provide plenty of romantic fun and are bound to bring you closer. However, for the lucky couple with a zest for open data and a bit more adventurous spirit, we would like to suggest something a little different this valentine’s day.

Why not try an open data themed valentine’s day trek powered by the SF Film Commission’s Film Locations dataset. This dataset collects every location in our fair city used to shoot movies, tv shows, or documentaries (over 1,500 locations!). Combining the data with the wonderful Open Movie Database API and Google Maps API we are able to have a curated list of SF locations featured in romantic movies and shows.

Use the below map to stroll through the sites of your favorite romance movies. Only want the best? Filter to see only the top rated. Want a little comedy or maybe some action with your romance? Filter by other genres. Click on each location for a plot summary.

Whether you want to trace the SF steps of The Princess Bride, bike to all 10 locations of Nine Months, or explore the interesting genre classifying habits of IMDB (So I Married an Axe Murder is romance? Really IMDB?), we have got you covered. Grab your partner, pick your favorite romantic movies, netflix/hulu/amazon it, and then explore (and dare I suggest) re-enact your favorite scenes this Valentine’s Day (except the one with the axe :-).
